Oh, The Places You’ll Go! A Dr. Seuss Birthday Party

First of all – can we please celebrate the fact that my husband, Jesse, and I have kept a little human alive and (mostly) happy for one whole year?! There were moments in the beginning of this mom life – running off of two hours of sleep, recovering from labor and trying to figure out the mess that is nursing – when I literally felt like I couldn’t do it for one more day. But goodness, how so much has changed! I have learned so much from this little boy and I can only dream about the adventures, excitement and craziness that the future holds for our little family. He absolutely lights up our lives with his continual laughter, joy and huge personality. He is my continual breath of fresh air – and now he’s celebrating his first birthday!

So, in honor of Sutton and all that he is, we celebrated his first birthday!! (Tears!) Aside from the heartache as I see how quickly time passes (a cliche that couldn’t be more true), it was SUCH a fun day for our family. We enjoyed it so much, not only because all of our friends and family joined us, but because Sutton was over-the-moon giddy. He loved playing with all of the kids and he was wide-eyed with fascination when he saw all of the colorful decorations in our house! He couldn’t get enough of the ball pit or gifts and all of the kids were super hyper from the excessive amount of sweets to be found on every table.

I decided on the birthday theme, “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” from the well-known Dr. Seuss book. I loved this theme for two main reasons:

1. I’m an avid reader and Sutton is slowly turning into one as well. Books are my jam.

2.  The COLORS!

I love colorful things. If my house could look like Candy Land, I would be the happiest person in the world. So this was obviously the next best thing!

The dessert table was my favorite part – primarily because I love sweets – but I also loved the color that it added to the room. We made Cotton Candy Truffula Trees, Fruity Krispies, Chocolate Pretzels and Rainbow Cookies (unfortunately my cookies didn’t turn out as I had hoped, but they tasted delicious anyway!)

The cake and smash cake were made by Kim’s Cake Studio! She always does such an incredible job on our cakes!

I filled vases with pastel Sixlets that I found at Hobby Lobby, striped straws and blue gum balls that I found in the party section at Target! I purchased the lollipops from my local specialty candy store.

My sister-in-law, Tynisha, did an absolutely incredible job helping with the decorations! She’s a party-planner-in-the-making, so please contact me if you’re interested in having her help you out! She and her husband made all of the wood crates and signs by hand. The hanging balloons were made of card stock, string and cardboard for the basket.

Each table had a handmade ‘fence’ with fake grass, a pinwheel and truffula tree inside. The hot-air balloons are made of paper maiche with straws connecting them to a tin can wrapped in twine. We bought the ‘S’ for Sutton at Hobby Lobby and painted it orange! A huge thank you to Kara’s Party Ideas for the fun concepts!

The ball pit was such a hit! The kids were outside for nearly the entire party – I loved that it was something Sutton could join in on, even at his age. I purchased the balls from Wal-Mart and the blow-up pool from Costco!

This sign was my favorite! Isn’t it so cute?!

The picture below is Sutton’s one year photo that I put into all of his invitations. My sweet boy!

  • You can come do my birthday party anytime. I don't know where to begin because I love everything you have done here. Food, cake, decorations everything.

  • Such a cute party! We did Horton Hears a Who (our son is a dwarf and we love the quote "A Person's A Person, No Matter How Small") - LOVE your cake!

  • Such a fun idea for a first birthday party. Happy one-year, Sutton! Our daughter is going to be one in a couple months, and I'm so excited to plan her party. :D

  • You did such an amazing job on this! I love Dr. Seuss trees but never thought of eating them!

  • This has got to be the best birthday theme I've ever seen. Great job on all of the decorations! They read this book to us at high school graduation and everyone teared up.
